The Persian and The Himalayan Cat

Persian Kittens For Sale

Everyone agrees that the Persian was at the top of the list of "possessions" highly esteemed by royalty, from the king of Persia to queens and kings of England. In the late 19th century, North America discovered the Persian cat, and it soon reached the pinnacle of honor that it still holds today – that of being the single most popular cat in the United States!

With its gorgeous, silky, long-flowing coat and engaging face to match its charming disposition, it is no wonder that the Persian is the favorite cat among all pedigreed breeds. Persians require a calm, stable home environment, but once they feel safe and secure, they will be a constant source of pleasure to the lucky household that has the good fortune to receive its affection.

Breathing difficulties and skin and eye problems may also develop, particularly in the "Peke-nosed" Persian with the very flat face resembling that of a Pekinese. It is always best to be aware of all these facts before committing to adopting a Persian cat.

A wide variety of coat colors has been achieved by very selective breeding, but this breeding has also led to the creation of an increasing number of flat-faced Persians. Although the flat-faced Persians are favored by some fanciers, this head structure can bring with it a number of health problems. As with the Siamese breed, there have been efforts by some breeders to preserve the older type of cat with a more pronounced muzzle, which is still more popular with the general public.

The Persian cat's body is medium to large, low on the legs, broad and deep through the chest, and equally massive across the shoulders and rump. Despite its "frou-frou" appearance, the Persian has good muscle tone with no notable tendency towards obesity. Its coat is long and thick, of fine texture, glossy and full of vitality. In CFA (Cat Fanciers’ Association) Standards, the Persian coat colors are divided into color divisions, but a wide variety of colors and patterns is permissable.

Persians are very beautiful to look at and generally have a sweet disposition, a quiet manner, and a regal character. They can tolerate almost anything, and will just walk away if bothered, avoiding further engagement. Persians are very gentle by nature, and make wonderful pets. They are highly ornamental in your home, have lovely soft fur, and are not usually prone to being destructive in any way. Persian cats usually adjust quite well to new surroundings, although some can be shy around loud noises. They tend to live long lives and to become very attached to their owners. Persians make delightful pets and will bring you much joy.

The Persian requires regular maintenance to keep the beauty of that coat, so consider carefully before making a lifetime commitment to this glorious cat. There will be shedding of hair, the possibility of runny eyes, and occasional grooming problems. Usually only older Persian cats have a tendency not to groom themselves. Some owners have their Persian cat shaved by the vet to address severe grooming issues and hasten recovery.

Are Persian cats friendly?

The Perscian cat is exceptionally friendly, and even doglike in their friendliness level. They are calm and loving, both with their owners and strangers. They love being picked up and cuddled, and will be happiest on your lap, purring loudly. They are also happy cats, not grumply or aloof, and are pleased just to lay quietly with their family.

Can Persian cats be left alone?

This is a very laid back cat, that sleeps a lot, and is very chilled out. So while attached to their owners, they are usually perfectly fine to be left alone during the day. The Persian cat is also a breed that is less keen to go out and about, so will be fine snoozing and relaxing in your home.

Is it easy to train a Persian cat?

It must be admitted that this is not the smartest of cat breeds. They are a little slower at developing than other breeds. They are not stubborn, but can be difficult to train, as they can struggle to understand what you want of them. Patience is needed when teaching a Persian cat, it has even been noted that it takes them weeks to learn how to use a cat flap!
